So what do you do if you joined this challenge with problem solving in mind and not creating optimal health? Don’t worry—you’re not doomed! Your starting point is just your starting point—not your end point. You can recalibrate your motivation right now.
This is a teachable moment! And here’s why it’s possible:
- You’re about to take a step forward. You’ve made the decision to begin eating healthier, losing weight (if applicable), being more active, etc. And even if that first step is a reaction to the emotional conflict you feel at least you’re committed and on the move to getting healthier.
We just need to keep you going in the right direction on the path to optimal health.
- You’re open to allowing the change process to succeed. Until now, you didn’t know how important motivation was. But now you can see the profound difference between avoiding bad stuff and supporting good stuff. With this new insight, you’re able to make a major shift in your motivation, and as a result dramatically improve your chance of success.
- You truly want a positive outcome. Sure, there are problems you’d like to solve, and future problems you want to avoid. But even more, there’s a life you want to build. Think of it this way: even if those problems disappeared tomorrow, you’d still want to have the life you desire, right?
Imagine how your life will look once you’ve created optimal health for yourself. Optimal—the most desirable or favorable possible, the highest possibility there is. It’s the perfect word for us. After all, we’re all different. One person’s optimal health might mean running a four-minute mile or breaking the record for weight lifting. For someone else, optimal might mean being able to play tennis or run a few miles every day. And for yet another person, it might mean they can play with their grandchildren and live a healthy, normal life.
Your optimal health profile—your personal best—is our goal. Not our only goal, but certainly one of our most important ones. And it all begins by shifting your motivation from being against bad things to being in favor of good ones.

eHealth Challenge Tip: Buddy System
A great way to navigate celebrations is to stick close to someone who understands and supports what you’re trying to do. If your host or hostess is someone close to you, you might even ask them to help you by providing a healthy food option for you. If a friend, spouse, or family member isn’t available in person at the event, you might have someone available to call for a few seconds of support—or even text—if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just knowing someone is in your corner cheering for your success can be tremendously powerful.
